A very laid-back, very happy home. If I were a bit older, I’d probably write about the vibe.....

.... Here in the unspoilt coastal bush near Hokitika, Hêmi and Pauline’s B&B manages to get everything right. Take the opportunity to relax by the open fire in the guest lounge accompanied by Maori-speaking Hêmi's intricate knowledge of local history and traditional Maori story-telling. Throw a fine wine list, Pauline’s tempting cooking (using home-grown produce) into the mix and you won’t find many that venture out at night in search of restaurants. The three handsome guest rooms are beautifully decorated in various colour schemes, with furniture picked up by Pauline from, oh, all over the place. The Goldsborough is the grandest with its elegant decor and double spa bath. And there is also a self-catering apartment. Outside are six acres of gardens and farmland with plenty of natives majestically thriving - just have a look at the Kauri trees. A secluded spa pool (under cover for rainy days) is nestled away, where you can sit and gaze at the Milky Way. Accompanied by the bird life you can fish on the nearby beach or take a short walk to a look-out point in the bush. Poppy "the pop-up" dog, one proud cat, two horses, sheep and fresh-egg producing chooks are all in residence. Hêmi also restores Morris Eights; if you’re well behaved, like I was, you might get a spin in one, like I did. So be good, because it's well worth it and I have to say, this is as much a promise to return as a write-up.
