Brooding from its rocky vantage, Silverpine is positioned on a bluff that bridges the beautiful Lakes Wanaka and Hawea. It is the only building for miles and its setting, amid the snow-peaked Southern Alps, is not a breath away from extraordinary.....

.... I decided to trek to the lodge through waist-high grass, stopping every now and then to gaze out on a pastoral idyll of dusky mountains and glassy lakes and to watch the falcons wheeling high above a herd of deer. When I finally made it to Silverpine, as night was falling, I waited for appropriate words to reach my lips and just settled on ‘wow’. The lodge is beautifully designed to blend and not compete with its surroundings. From the sheep-skin strewn, pebbled (and heated!) long window-seats in the elegantly neutral bedrooms to the giant silverpine beams in the high ceilings, the magnificent 14-foot black pine dining table and the slabs of rock that cover the floors, everything here is natural, earthy and strong. Mike has carved most of the furniture himself from timber collected over the years from the West Coast, and with each piece there is a tale to be told. Fittingly, Sue, who originally comes from Hawaii and Mike, a sub-Antarctic fisherman in a former life, are two of the most genuinely down-to-earth and interesting people I met in NZ. Special mention for Sue’s superb cooking... her scallops on saffron risotto are an absolute sensation. But then trust me, everything about this place is great, almost perfectly so. Helicopter rides available.
