Living history pervades Braemar on Parliament Street. Positioned next to the site of a sacred Maori spring, this 1901 townhouse shares its space with some of the oldest colonial parliamentary buildings in town.....

.... In 1994 Sue and John pooled everything they had to buy the house and save it from circling developers and demolition. Now, to walk through its doors is to step back in time to a house dressed in late-victorian elegance and filled with bygone charm. A grand old kauri staircase leads to high-ceilinged rooms set with antiques and refined bathrooms with check-tiled floors and claw-footed baths. Old photographs line the walls upstairs while downstairs in the rose dining room you’ll use silver cutlery to eat your delicious breakfast off fine bone china on white damask tablecloths. I spent the night in the Batten Suite, its rooms often visited by the 1930’s aviation star Jean Batten during the years her father lived there. With even more character than their home, your hosts are as incredibly helpful as they are charming and will match your interest in the city and the house with as much information as they can. Sue loves to sing. You’ll no doubt hear her hum to the sounds of the new day as she prepares breakfast, and John, who does voice-overs for TV and radio, is a natural-born raconteur. Braemar is as much a place to curl up on the sofa and read as it is a base from which to explore the city and you’ll be sure to find both equally rewarding.
