When I arrived Kay and Kees were sprucing up an already stunning Knapdale for the New Zealand ‘House of the Year’ assessment. (Incidentally they went on to win gold, just another acknowledgment to add to a long list of awards for accommodation and environmental achievements).....

.... Needless to say this 32ha sustainable farm is an absolute cracker. The Weytmans are aiming for complete self-sufficiency. This means that freshly-harvested veggies are served alongside home-grown beef, venison or lamb for dinner (you must experience one of Kay’s four-course wonders); while orchard fruits, fresh eggs and home-made muesli make their entrance at breakfast. All the animals, the eels in the lake, the roaming deer and the penned porkers for example, are up for a bit of personal interaction so feel free to join Kees on a farm-feeding spree. Kees, a forestry man by trade, is utterly entranced by nature: “I’m in love with my trees!” he enthused, directing a flow of aborial information my way. Things to do here are as numerous as the thriving community of woody perennials. Knapdale is home to unique geological phenomena, is steeped in Maori history and supports a wide array of NZ wildlife. A multitude of shade-dappled strolls suitable for the lazy poets among us and endless trails suitable for the hardier hiker extend through the farm into the wild lands beyond, taking in caves, waterfalls and magical Maori spots. With Gisborne just 8km away this beautifully tranquil place could keep you entertained for weeks... or the rest of your life in the case of Kay and Kees.
