That’s quite some window they’ve got there. You’re out in the country 5km from Te Anau, near a lake, near the mountains.....

.... Any window stands a good chance of impressing. But this one? Wow. Entering Fiordland Lodge you’re assaulted by a wall of glass rising some 30 feet, through which you look westwards across the grassland to Lake Te Anau and the forested lower slopes of Mt Luxmore. The large sitting area that confronts this view has deep armchairs and sofas, with a bar in the corner in case it all gets too much. In the middle of the room vast supporting trunks of silver beech compete for attention with a river stone fireplace that uses old bridge beams from the Milford Road. Everything in this building, built in 2002, is natural. Smart bedrooms use earth colours, chunky beams and relaxing spot lighting. Bathrooms are particularly handsome, with basins on wooden benches, more natural tones and big wicker baskets. And sumptuous dinners - included in the lodge prices - are served in the dining-room, which also looks west. Away from the lodge there are many natural activities - Ron was a National Park ranger and guides fishermen, bird-watchers and nature lovers in the Fiordland National Park. There are also two cheaper chalets, where dinner in the lodge is an optional extra.
