Bev Fothergill, an ex-teacher with three children and four grandchildren, is clearly the nurturing type. And her sprawling garden, which was once part of the family farm, is testament to her abilities: crimson liquid-amber trees, flowering cherries, crab apples, orange persimmon, passion fruit, three types of apple, piles of pumpkins and feijoas.....

.... If you like freshly-grown food, you’ll be as happy as a pig in mud; incidentally, there actually is a pig living here. Fothergills have farmed this spot for 42 years, hidden away in this “special, lovely little valley” (Bev’s own incontrovertible words) with the Mimiha stream meandering through the garden. It was a balmy autumnal afternoon when I visited, perfect weather for an outdoor Mediterranean feast of mozzarella and heirloom tomato salad, all freshly picked from the garden. My only regret was that I didn't come on a summer’s evening. With the patio lit by fairy-lights and flares, Bev’s husband often plays his ukulele for guests and neighbours and the parties can go on into the wee hours. When guests retire, they can look forward to cosy rooms or the comfortable self-catering cottage. Either way the Fothergills' breakfast is not to be missed: freshly-squeezed juices, endless varieties of fruit, home-made Greek yoghurt, muesli, jams, jellies, preserves and probably the best toasted bagels in New Zealand… and it’s all home-grown and fresher than a shower of summer sun.
