Stepping into Breakaway Retreat is like clambering into a tree-trunk hideaway. Tucked away just above the seashore, surrounded by native bush and singing with birds, this self-catering cottage is a sylvan idyll, newly built by Mark and Sheelagh entirely out of pinewood.....

.... The walls have been left simple and bare - the view and the trees are your three-dimensional works of art here. The cottage windows open onto the trees and to the seashore below and, lying on the bed in the main bedroom, I was comforted by the sounds of birds plashing in the water. You can stroll across the lawn to the shore and perch yourself on moeraki boulders (unusual to find them outside the South Island), or take the kayaks out for a splash. Alternatively, one could always watch DVDs on the huge TV in your living room; or I quite fancied the idea of indulging myself in the enormous two-person spa bath. Mark and Sheelagh lived in the cottage themselves last winter to see for themselves what would be needed to create a perfect home from home; so I doubt you will be at a loss for anything during your stay. Despite the feeling of rural seclusion, Breakaway is perfectly situated for further exploration of the Whangarei Heads area if you are feeling adventurous. Otherwise the Prossers' secluded beach (safe for children) offers endless opportunities for swimming, beach-combing, fishing and general pottering. Oh, and keep an eye out for dolphins and orcas from the deck between August and December.
