Turning your back on the views at Kuaotunu might well be the hardest thing you have to do on your holiday. I longed to stay to watch the sun set and the moon rise, but needs must when the devil drives and I had to press on.....

.... The house is perched above the beach among ten acres of garden, its wrap-around decking offering up a panoramic spread of sparkling sea, white sand and open expanse of sky for your delight. Think of a picture postcard and, unlikely as it sounds, you are probably there. There's no need to move when such a view is available, so grab a meal from Whitianga or Coromandel Town, bring it back to your private deck and enjoy the view. It's worth trying out the rest of the house, though, because Lorraine and Bill milled the macrocarpa and built it especially for guests, with an open-plan layout that cleverly allows you to be just as sociable as you choose. I was fascinated by the collection of objets trouvés scattered throughout the house, such as the child's raincoat made from woven reeds, or the collection of model Pacific Island boats from Bill's childhood. The guest rooms are similarly appealing spaces, with the strong colours of local artists' work competing for attention with the bright sunlight and the sea views. If one should want to venture further afield than the beach below, then the hotspot (literally) of Hot Water Beach is within driving distance, and the artistic community of Coromondel offers a great day trip.
