We stumbled into Robyn and Ken’s breakfast room at an unseasonably early hour on our way to the airport, and were greeted by just the kind of breakfast to set you up for a day – or two – and the sort of welcoming hosts that we love. Robyn and Ken have been pretty much everywhere (although the Great Wall of China is still on the to-do list) and have amassed a whole host of objets d'art and travellers' tales.....

.... Their best collection, though, is Kiwi through and through: an assembly of mottled kauri-wood furniture that the museums are dying to get their hands on. Upstairs, the Omahu Room has the kind of window-seat I dream of snuggling up on with a book. The Mt Hobson and One Tree Hill rooms give views of, you guessed it, Mt Hobson and One Tree Hill, with fresh white walls and bright paintings on the walls. The glass brick wall of the bathroom makes the space seem even brighter. My favourite, however, was the Pool Suite downstairs, with its separate lounge with cream walls, tapa cloth and en-suite bathroom (I’m always one for a luxurious bathroom) which has a glass wall looking through to some enclosed fernery, a sort of bush bath in the middle of the city. All the little things have been taken care of here, with a thousand thread count sheets, rattan furniture for relaxing by the courtyard pool, and four hot-water cylinders so that they never run out of hot water!
