Huntington Stables is so intelligently thought out for honeymooners that if you arrive as friends, don’t blame me if you leave engaged. The wine cellar spoils you for choice, but perhaps try locally-born wine-maker Michelle Richardson’s own drop? It’s a wine typical of Carole and Neil in that they’re supporting commendable New Zealand products and local businesses; in the eloquently self-contained and modestly-named Stables you’ll find Essenza Coffee, Blue Earth toiletries, Antipodes Water, fresh local flowers and a bowl of fruit from one of the region’s famous farmers’ markets.....

.... The bathroom is a work of art and the kitchen will motivate even the weariest cook. But, if you’re a foody, I suggest popping next door to the Wrights for a meal. The highlight for me was a home-made berry sorbet; it was Carole’s first attempt at that dish, but evidently successful as Neil and I were re-filling our bowls as if we’d lived dessert-deprived childhoods. That evening, for research purposes only, I had a sauna, a swim in the pool and ozone-treated spa under a star-lit canopy that illuminated each wet foot print. The next morning, I woke to the sunrise and a view of the picture-perfect Mt Mangatautari, a silver disk of cloud hovering over its summit. And that’s what the friendly Huntington Stables is like, a picture-perfect touch of class in a petite, pretty town.
