Mangaweka appears small, so remain wide-eyed, as since the highway was moved you may blink and drive straight past the township like I did. That said, not everyone zips past.....

.... Richard "Az" Aslett, an artist and Yorkshireman turned New Zealander, once stopped here for a coffee at the iconic Aeroplane Café, created a screen print of it, which won a place on 59,000 Telecom phone book covers, bought a church and a cottage, both over 100 years old, and decided to stay! Now the church is painted a bold yellow on the outside; inside an art gallery exhibits paintings, photography, pottery, sculptures, wood-turning and poetry from artists all over the country. In the garden, a cherry tree and other vibrant plant life flourishes wildly. “I leave it to do its own thing,” Richard grins, although a part-time gardener, the free-roaming peacocks and affectionate ‘Chicky’ the chicken keep it reasonably tidy. The cottage is pretty simple, so if you’re looking for rustic country charm, then this is the place. It’s well priced, clean, comfortable and colourfully decorated. Richard will gladly cook, but prefers to recommend the Langholm Hotel just across the road; known for hearty pub grub, cold beer and locals who spin a colourfull yarn; if you time it right, you might even see the Taihape Music Club playing there too, featuring Richard on drums. Cherry Cottage has a unique character in a town that Richard has embraced with his all his heart; his enthusiasm for Mangaweka is infectious, so allow for time, you just might end up staying.
