Disa, the Walls’ effervescent springer spaniel, frantically wagged me a welcome and led me to the door where I met Helen. She invited me into her purpose-built modern retreat and we wandered into the hallway where an array of eye-catching photography lines the wall, depicting local wildlife and scenery; Helen likes to exhibit local artists here, so it might be a good opportunity to purchase a favourite by which to remember your New Zealand adventure.....

.... You’ll have plenty of time to consider your options over a complimentary wine on the broad outdoor deck, or beside the lounge’s grand open fire built from smooth river rocks. The sandstone and clay-shaded room interiors are designed by Helen and she’s done a great job with all the luxuries. They’re named after some of New Zealand’s famous avian beauties: Kereru, Tui, Korimako and Kotuku. While appreciating the views from each room, I struggled to picture this idyllic landscape blighted by mills and mines as it once was: now native birds flit around the tree tops of regenerating native bush, dairy cows meander to their distant milking shed and the stunning blue of the Hokitika River trims the edge of the Southern Alps. I wish I’d had time to kayak its surreally turquoise currents. I’ll just have to come back, perhaps to try a spot of fishing along the deserted beach where baby seals rest during winter. They like this secluded coast… I expect you will too. Broadband internet available.
