Not a slap of paint or a scrap of wallpaper tarnish this wheat-coloured mud-brick treasure; there’s just thought-provoking art hanging on walls that breathe with the conditions, keeping cool in the summer and warm in the winter… why aren’t all places this logical? Not only ideal for humankind… Mother Nature is also a big fan of Jefferswood: I counted eight tuis zipping about the garden, in and out of the flowering cherries and the bird-rich crab-apples. The organic garden pumps out produce and the orchard dishes up plums, apples, nectarines, apricots and hazelnuts.....

.... Combine this with home-made yoghurt, bread and muesli, and you will be the only thing that is spoilt rotten at breakfast! The evening meal is up to you: try picking a salad from Sandra’s garden and doing dinner Kiwi-style at the barbecue, under the shaded canopy of the 350-year-old totara. Enjoy a crisp Marlborough sauvignon blanc and that summer sizzling sound harmonising with the bell-birds. I seemed to see, taste and hear better here and really noticed the details; perhaps it’s because this is the first place I’ve visited where the commercial distortion of TV has been bravely rejected for more traditional, communicative and relaxing pastimes: conversation, music, books, big leather couches, studying the night’s crystal-clear constellations and taking rides in Jeff’s 1965 MGB Roadster. In short, this is the place to shut out the hubbub of the modern world and enjoy some good natural living.
