What a cheery place! I defy any of you to leave Straw Lodge without a spring in your step. Interesting, super-friendly hosts, lots of wine, good food and charming accommodation constructed of straw and plastered to create an atmospheric, well-insulated, rustic walling.....

.... Eight years ago this area was just paddocks, but now 19 acres of vines reach virtually to the doors of the guest rooms in this picture-postcard setting in the Wairau Valley. The surroundings are ideal for sitting back, ordering one of Nettie and Jane's hearty vineyard platters, or firing up the barbecue, and indulging in a few ‘in-house’ sauvignon blancs or pinot noirs, made by a local wine-maker from Straw Lodge grapes. In warm weather (virtually the whole year in sunny Blenheim) meals are served outside on a long table under trellises, a setting that reminded me of those country feast scenes from olive oil adverts. Guests stay in vineyard suites either side of the main house, but you’re welcome, nay expected, to roam unfettered. There’s a woody lounge with big beams and a large fire, a spa under the stars, private courtyards and BBQ areas, plus DVDs, CDs and TVs in all the rooms. Needless to say, it was definitely a wrench to leave. Nettie and Jane advise you about all sorts of wine-tasting, walking, 4X4, fishing and cycling excursions. Complimentary golf clubs, mountain and electric bikes, and wine-tasting available for guests.
