You landlubbers are missing out. The real beauty is at sea, where secluded islands and beaches can be explored in style aboard the Chelsea Bride.....

.... This roomy 42-foot sloop is where, as Ed says, “a bad day on the water is better than a good day in the office.” He’s seems to be right too. We sailed into the first misty day the Bay of Islands had seen in months, but I was still thrilled to be there, especially when lunch was served. This charter’s menu is a foody’s delight with three or four courses of gourmet cuisine. As I was tucking into Inge’s mouth-watering chicken salad, I figured the Chelsea Bride would be hard to beat. Ed has held his skipper’s ticket for 30 years, 25 of which have been in New Zealand, so his knowledge of the sea and the bay’s history is comprehensive. The longer you’re aboard, the further you’ll venture, seeing diverse wildlife along the way. Everything you need is on board: snorkel, fins, an inflatable dingy or kayaks to step onto land and explore the islands’ scenic tracks. The double berth is private and comfortable, but I’d be inclined to sleep under the stars in the foredeck’s luxury double hammock. If you’d prefer to avoid the evening sea’s gentle rock, the Amslers can combine day trips with onshore accommodation, their own Chalet Romantica being the obvious choice.
