While sipping coffee on a misty morning, watching the sheep dogs playfully sprint around the lemon trees, I said to myself: "The Rocks, now there’s an understatement." You’ll understand when you wander through the white picket gate and enter the shaded canopy of the totara and walnut trees, for they veil a gorgeous outcrop of, well, rocks.....

.... These QEII-protected formations are extraordinary and their volcanic origins provoke much discussion about time and age as theirs is a mystery. Some geologists say they’re 40 million years old, others say four million. It’s easier to ponder the homestead’s history. Tim and Janice have carefully renovated the 1922 kauri and totara house, giving considerable consideration to its origins. Aside from luxuries like fine linen, DVDs and flat screens, the rooms retain that charming homestead feel. Given a choice, ask for the splendid Jounneaux Suite, named after one of the young settlers who mischievously etched his signature into the window-pane. The dining room also retains its 1920s grandeur with furniture, wallpaper, sash windows, an open fireplace, a great baronial oak table and a petite cigar room, all from the Jounneaux era. Hearty rural fare is on the menu here, but good restaurants are close and Tim offers a ride to and from some personally-recommended eateries. Personally I would stay in, finding the company of the salt-of-the-earth Langmans a far more inviting alternative.
