The Millers are an industrious Kiwi couple that have gradually sourced recycled materials from the Internet and, with the help of award-winning interior designer Jacquie Bain, creatively fashioned two very eclectic, fun cabins. Forget that unnecessary newfangled electricity stuff.....

.... Gas barbecues and candlelight do more than simply set the mood here. There’s also a free-standing potbelly stove that you should definitely light (I doubt you will be able to resist in fact) so you can listen to the embers crackle and smoulder while you drift off to sleep in some very fine linen. Silver goblets are on hand to sip Bert’s wide variety of home-stilled chemical-free liquors. Select a complimentary bottle and head outdoors to the fire-heated slipper-bath tucked privately away beside your cabin, or on the deck if you prefer, where the verandah ceiling doubles as a blackboard with sweet messages left by the hands of previous travellers. One read: “if this is as good as it gets, then this must be heaven.” I understood the sentiment down by the Waitekohe stream where the cicadas roar. There’s a couple of shallow swimming holes, a fire-pit and hammocks strung under rewarewa trees where I met a young English couple head to toe in their own hammock; they stretched, gave me a wave and smiled as if to say “we have found the good life”. They’re right, of course. Life is very good here. BBQs, hot baths, bird song and a sense of humour to boot – take a peak at Bert’s little tattoo on the back of his head… it’ll bring a smile.
