Wanaka is a destination for all seasons and Maple Lodge has been thoughtfully designed to cater for them all. I sat at the dining table on a hot summer afternoon, a soft breeze fanning through the big open doors, and I revived myself with steady sips of ice water while I contemplated my surroundings.....

.... The lounge would be an ideal place to hibernate away on winter evenings. I could imagine dumping my ski gear in the drying room and repairing to the schist log-burner, with its leather sofas, rugs and the odd conversation piece mounted on the walls (such as the pitchfork grown from a single piece of wood). The courtyard and gardens suit spring and autumn, great spots from which to appreciate the fiery turning of the maple trees, as free-range chickens scurry through the new grass, before easing into the outdoor hot tub, or playing ‘Lord of the Rings’, an eye-catching game invented by Bernadette and built from Dunedin wharf’s recycled foundations. The view, though, is a year-round marvel: Mt Gold, Mt Maud, Mt Iron and the distant Black Peak. You can see some of these from the bedrooms, each of which has been individually decorated by Bernadette. All the rooms are very comfortable, with custom-made New Zealand furniture, personally-collected wall art and plenty of extras. So whether you’re here to ski during winter or trek in spring, swim in summer or wine-taste in autumn, you can’t go wrong at Maple Lodge.
