As I crested a hill all that lay before me - the strange turquoise surfaces of Lakes Pukaki and Tekapo and the magnificence of Mt Cook - radiated an ethereal, almost surreal beauty as they shimmered in the pure sunshine. I had to stop and stare for quite some time.....

.... Eventually, following the blue canals, I made my way to Matuka Lodge, which imitates the iconic Kiwi shed with corrugated iron protecting its symmetrical shoulders, and revels in its own private slice of this extraordinary landscape. Rosalie welcomed me in and before long I was sitting down to a hot cuppa in the lounge, making appreciative mental notes of all the eye-arresting original art works gathered by the Smiths during their years in South Africa and Australia. This place is a real home and I felt very welcome. The den’s bookshelf spills over with paperbacks and the kitchen has a variety of gourmet teas, good coffee and wines and beers whenever you want them. The restful suites all pay due homage to the wondrous views, particularly the premiere rooms where you can watch, from the luxury of a double spa bath, the preternatural colours of the landscape slowly kaleidoscope one to another as the sun heads west. Nearer to home the rooms look out onto a trout- and lily-filled lake. Rosalie assures me that the trout glide undisturbed by line or lure, even though Russell is a passionate fly-fisherman. Instead he heads for other local rivers in this gateway to Mount Cook, surely one of the most spectacular gateways to anywhere on earth. Matuka Lodge fits right in.
