Even the driveway is special at Okuku, winding through fields of freshly-cut hay and a tall grove of trees before arriving at the entrance of this beautiful, Italian Renaissance-influenced homestead. The interior is every bit as grand as the exterior: original artworks, antique furniture, middle-eastern carpets; floorboards characteristically pitted from decades of dancing stilettos; a classic billiard room and an impressively large indoor pool; and immense fireplaces, two of which still shelter open flames throughout winter months.....

.... Lorraine has elegantly decorated the bedrooms, like the Wong Room, a gentlemanly space that once belonged to the head servant (I sort of expected there must be a White Room somewhere too); or the Rose Room, more suited to ladies with its petite writing desk; or the smaller Daffodil room, best in spring when its sash-windowed view over 10,000 daffodils comes into its own. The daffs grow within four acres of manicured garden, cedars, elms, oaks, beeches, redwoods and a variety of orchard trees. It’s pleasantly isolated from the tourist trail here, but there’s still plenty to do: Mount Thomas National Park, Woodland Beach, Jo Seeger’s reputable restaurant and Pegasus Bay Vineyard are all short drives away. You’re only 40 minutes from Mount Hutt’s ski fields and the Ashley River borders the property, if you fancy fly-fishing. But there’s no need to stray far, especially with such friendly hosts, home-made baking, afternoon tea, apéritifs and an elegant three-course dinner in picture-book surroundings all included in the experience.
