The Pennington kids originally inhabited Queen Street Villa during university, but they trickled away with graduations, so Penny and John waved the renovating wand over it and now a student might feel inclined to leave his shoes at the door. Having said that, I spent my time horizontal on the sofa, watching cricket on the flat-screen, and drinking beer! But don’t get the wrong idea, this is a very chic private retreat where Penny’s talent for interiors will make your stay feel rather special.....

.... The lounge is homely with its antique kauri chest, a flame mahogany chiffonier, bean-bags, art works that certainly pleased this particular pair of eyes, and re-upholstered family armchairs that could stand as works of art themselves. Kimonos decorate the bedrooms, displayed over the ergonomically-designed Okooko beds, and there’s even a pillow menu here – poor sleepers have no excuse. Penny and John offer airport pick-ups and will zip you through a quick tiki-tour, namely up Mount Victoria to the best view in the city, although, if you feel like some air, the mountain trails are moments from your door. In fact most of Wellington’s treats are accessible by foot. Queen Street is just ten minutes from Cuba Street, Courtney Place and the harbour. That said, the Penningtons’ Miramar-based Chocolate Frog Café is well-worth driving to for breakfast and hopefully you’ll have time to chat with your delightful hosts there. And do try one their coffees, which must rank among the very best in town.
