You’ll struggle and then fail to find anyone who knows Stewart Island better than the interesting, intelligent, warm-hearted Taits, who have lived here for 40 years and whose southern hospitality is so genuine and natural. Peter’s tours are enthusiastic, entertaining and his knowledge of the island’s history, birdlife, plants, walking tracks and coast is unmatched, particularly on Ulva Island, a pristine, predator-free sanctuary for rare and endangered bird and plant species.....

.... Sails Ashore’s chic suites - skillfully-created rope chairs (I want one), fine linen, fridge, tea/coffee, surround-sound DVD and Iris’s home baking - are built with salvaged rimu and if there’s a theme it is nature. All these factors combine to make each room your own homely space. There’s no expense spared. Peter’s even designed a heated closet rack to dry out your hiking boots. The guest lounge is a treasure house of curiosities, such as the sea chest from Peter’s grandfather’s ship-jumping days, but there’s a story behind every object. Despite an extensive library, reading may be difficult with one eye constantly drawn outside to the constantly-changing mood and weather over Halfmoon Bay. It can be mesmerising, unless you’re distracted by the cheeky, inquisitive kakas who hop and groove across the deck outside. It is isolated here, but it’s definitely worth the effort. Stewart Island is incomparable and officially one of my most recommended New Zealand treasures for reviving the spirit… and that goes for Sails Ashore too.
