South Islanders Margaret and Peter have known about Kingston’s gems for 40 years. This quiet Lake Wakatipu backwater is home to 200 residents, the iconic Kingston Flyer steam train, a nine-hole golf course, beautiful nature walks, a fun little tavern serving simple, tasty, rural tucker (I recommend the seafood chowder) and just a very relaxed air that settles over you and calms you down.....

.... The view may have had something to do with it. Tranquillity Lodge has floor-to-ceiling windows in the sitting room that open onto the deck and the front lawn; this in turn glides down to the glassy lake’s shingle beach and some uninhibited views of the Hector Range, the Remarkables, Eyre Mountain and Coronet Peak on the distant horizon. Peter has all the gear that you need to make the most of your stay: fishing rods, kayaks, mountain-bikes, golf clubs. Or there are nice deck chairs under the lakefront willow tree, if you’re more of a reader. The lodge is comfortable with a private kitchen and sitting room with flat-screen TV and DVDs. The suites are not huge, but thoughtfully welcoming with the Pinot room being the pick of the two simply for its brilliant view. So yes, it’s relaxed here. This is holidaying New Zealand style, in a quiet nature-blessed setting away from the bright lights. If you want something hassle-free, something memorable, then Kingston’s the place and the warm-hearted Gibsons are the people.
