Any visitor to Murrell’s who arrives in daylight will be instantly drawn, as I was, to the incredible view from the garden of Lake Manapouri, surely one of the most beautiful bodies of water in the world. You can walk down via woods to the lakeside or set off along birdsong-supported tracks of the Fiordland National Park.....

.... The Waiau River is where you take the boats out to Doubtful Sound, a fantastic day out. Both the river and the lake are only a 5 minute walk away. If it rains, all the cliff waterfalls erupt with water and cascade into the sea … and if it's fine, well, then it’s fine. Dolphins are often seen, seals always. But Rob can tell you all about it. He was born here, grew up here, worked these skies as a pilot, the rivers as a jet-boat driver and the roads as a coachman. He knows Southland well and so did his ancestors who were among the first to settle here and conquer many of the local peaks. Amazingly the house was built 120 years ago by Rob’s great-grandfather. Today it’s run by fourth-generation Rob, his wife Philippa and their two children Zoë and Will who occasionally pitch in. The house retains the original simplicity of a historic homestead of this type, with old fittings and the aged family boar and stag trophies in the hallway. The bedrooms are spacious and light-filled, with good beds and good-quality linen. Group dinners can be arranged and they’re a fun affair, especially with Philippa and Rob, two very likable people, playing host. Murrell's is a very characterful place to base yourself when visiting Doubtful Sound and the Fiordland National Park.
