Far, far from the madding crowd, on an astonishing 100,000 acres of Southland farmland you find Nokomai. One of the largest privately-owned stations in the country, it’s home to 50,000 sheep, 2,000 cattle, horses and dogs as well as the station’s staff and families.....

.... The location is a ruralist’s dream and the driveway no less so. Leaving the Queenstown road, you criss-cross the Mataura River three times before turning along the banks of Nokomai Creek and onwards to the farm, which sits at the end of a light-filled valley. Accommodation is in four comfortable, purpose-built cottages where you can either self-cater or have your meals provided. There is plenty to do here; it is not a place to arrive at 6 and leave at 8 the next morning. You can watch the seasonal farm activities, walk forever, borrow mountain bikes, fish for trout with guides on the famous Mataura River (20km of which runs through the property), or you can even try your hand at ‘golfcross’ - trust a bunch of Kiwis to invent a form of golf that's played with a rugby-shaped golf ball and posts! Or, more glamorously, you can go ‘flightseeing’ with Nokomai helicopters. You can hire man and machine to go just about anywhere, from a tour of the station to Milford Sound, and do almost any activity: he’ll even drop you on a mountain top at sunset with a bottle of champagne.
