Only five years old, a mere fledgling, yet Bird’s Ferry Lodge seems nonetheless to have seamlessly nested upon its hilltop where it sits content, quietly musing on the far-reaching, sea-lined views. As I chatted with Alison and André from a snug sofa I tried to keep my attention on Greenwood Guides and away from the cinema-screen-sized window that frames the whole dramatic scene.....

.... Merlot and Mick, two whiskered, smiling, people-loving terriers, won me over at once, while the warming presence of an Aga in the kitchen (as rare as a traffic jam in New Zealand) reminded me of home. For Alison, a Celtic catering manager who just loves to cook, it was a must-have. Here foody treats are conjured from home-grown produce and resident chooks lay your eggs for breakfast. Originally from Cape Town, André has lived in New Zealand for the last 23 years and, with a past career as a guide, his knowledge of the country far exceeds that of any local. He's also a fully-qualified masseur and there's a massage room on site, if you should feel the need for even further relaxation. Also a very popular spa bath. At the end of the road, in twelve acres of seclusion, is the new cottage, with quirky driftwood furniture made by André, and disturbed only by kiwi calls at night. An old-fashioned bath sits out at the front, plumbed in with hot running water and perched over views stretching from sea to snow-covered mountain, just awaiting the glories of a sunset with a glass of bubbly in hand. Here there is no TV, no landline and no clock… just a wealth of peace, seclusion and beauty. Wireless broad band available for lodge guests.
