Just a 20-minute drive from Christchurch airport I found myself out in the country where the Rebbeck family have been modifying their 100-year-old farmhouse and land for years, stripping back wood panelling, adding bits on, tending the two-acre garden and planting hundreds of trees. Merrilies has the arty genes; she's the mother of a painter and her daughters’ artwork is exhibited on the walls.....

.... She also has a wonderful eye for interiors; the farmhouse feels earthy, homely and elegant, with wooden floors, kilims and seagrass matting. Merrilies wears many hats, farmer’s and chef’s among them; when I stayed we sat down to lamb, potatoes, kumara, leeks and chestnuts, all from the farm, rounded off with home-made apple sorbet with galliano. After breakfast I was whisked around the property on a 4-wheel motorbike to admire Dexter cattle, Dorset horned sheep, saddle-back pigs, white peacocks, black and white ducks, hens... and a sly donkey who is a bit of an escape artist and known to take himself for a stroll to the distant property boundary. If you go looking for him, I suggest you also take a detour through the garden and orchard to the pond full of bird-life. When you get back, rest those sore muscles in the outdoor hot tub, set on a platform with views over the garden. Or just relax inside. In either case, Ballymoney is lots of fun.
