With uncanny timing, I arrived at what could have been an awkward moment as the lodge was full of Bill and Judy’s friends who had all popped in after a big get-together in the mountains the previous day. But we all got nattering so easily that I would have wanted to include Charwell even if the rooms had resembled medieval penitentiary cells.....

.... Unsurprisingly, the bedrooms were all wonderful with top-class linens, throws and curtains made by Judy and serene private verandahs with views over the southern mountains. And these views are mesmerising, across the spread of the plains below with the broad Waiau River curling through, and (on my visit) the snow-topped mountains across the valley wreathed in mist. Relax in the jacuzzi and relish the perfection. The house was built in country style with old doors salvaged from demolition yards. The rimu front door (complete with iron horse’s head bell), for example, came from a girls’ school in Christchurch. There are a lot of African and South American artefacts from the couple’s time abroad and a David Shepherd painting in the guest living room that Bill carried rolled up in his rucksack for months on end during their travels. I met Charlotte the goat and completely lost track of time. Don’t make the same mistake as I did and have to leave too soon. Hanmer Hot Springs five minutes down the road. Closed 25th December.
