A very chirpy Jenny waving from the gate was not the only vibrant presence that greeted me on my arrival at Villa 10. On introduction to ‘the loft’ I was amazed by just how much sunshine you can fit into one room.....

.... Bright, cheeky blues and turquoises are brought to life with Jenny-designed cushions, sofa covers and curtains. The four-poster, a sheer masterpiece with regal curtained sides, deserves to be displayed in a gallery. Jenny is one of Nelson’s many acclaimed artists and, although she no longer paints for a living, you are welcome to visit her downstairs studio where art has become an adventurous pleasure. Graham, meanwhile, is probably happier outside. A builder by trade, keen tramper and mountain biker, he knows the best local spots and will happily take you there. Together they architecturally redesigned and renovated this 1908 gem. The West Wing apartment retains a traditional feel with an open log fire and homely primary-coloured kitchen, which will bring any meal to life. I was astounded by the size of an ancient wisteria that had twined itself around the balcony. Villa 10’s two very different apartments both share soaring views from their verandahs across Tasman Bay to the mountains of Kahurangi National Park. This peaceful hillside property is a perfect launch pad for Nelson restaurants and activities and the abundance of local wilderness.
