The wide, open windows and verandahs at Te Puna Wai boast one of the best views in this book, straight out over Haulashore Island and the Nelson harbour entrance, with the Tasman and Arthur ranges to left and right respectively. The house is Richard and James’s pride and joy, a mid-Victorian (1857) villa with a fine, intricate façade, the whole building restored and painstakingly completed under Richard’s generalship.....

.... Guests have a choice of three rooms. Downstairs the Haulashore apartment has its own balcony, bedroom and state-of-the-art kitchen (chrome and granite grey) and a gorgeously green, marble-tiled bathroom with underfloor heating; the Wakatu room at the back also has a marble bathroom and the two rooms make a wonderful apartment for families. Or there’s the attic Fifeshire suite, my personal favourite for its open wall of a window looking down at the bay and up at the stars. Arabian Nights notions leap to the imagination. The luxurious marble-tiled bathroom is full of whimsical design touches and has a wonderful full-length, claw-foot bath. There is a first-floor sitting-room with blue sofas, mango walls and wooden floors, many books and a stunning verandah with a low parapet. Richard is a truly talented linguist (German, French, Spanish and Portuguese) and much travelled. He and partner James provide a stylish, visually energising city retreat. Te Puna Wai must be one of the happiest places I have visited. Friendly cat in residence and many canine visitors. High-speed Internet, guest PC, WIFI LAN.
