On a flat tidal rock bed, flanked by native bush, in a tiny private bay complete with a short sweep of sandy beach you will find an idyllic cottage, raised on stilts to allow high tide to lap beneath the deck. When I first laid eyes on it, all I could manage was a sigh and some goose pimples.....

.... The ‘Shanty’ was once genuinely a shanty, but it is a bit of a joke name now for this highly styly beachside retreat. Inside, polished kahikatea-wood floors are strewn with rugs, walls are white, russet timbers smell of wood wax. Deep couches flank a beautiful antique table scarred with age and French windows open wide onto a long deck built around ancient pohutukawa trees. The pantry is chock-full of provisions (herbal teas, spices, flour, sauces etc) and mod cons include a dishwasher, stainless-steel oven, microwave, outdoor BBQ, outdoor heaters… but no TV reception or phone here, although there are DVDs and a stereo for rainy days. The only sounds are the mud that pops or the herons that fish for snapper, like you can, five metres from the door. You can hunt for rock oysters, too. Two kayaks, life-vests and fishing gear are all provided. This place is so special that friends wonder why Peter doesn’t live there himself. Warkworth is 12 mins away. Children are welcome.
