A genuine country retreat that swarms with animals, Mudbrick Lodge is blissfully cut off and blissfully quiet – the kind of place that we feel rather guilty about sharing with the world. Kelvin is a man of the land and can take you on true-blue hunting trips, while Tania is young, enthusiastic and a trained chef.....

.... This last fact you must be sure to take advantage of. She serves breakfast in the main house in a conservatory overlooking the 1,000-acre valley. Along with the resident dog and cats, I gravitated towards the kitchen (complete with coffee-machine – Tania is an Auckland escapee after all), where we chatted over mountains of food. The bedrooms in the separate guest cottage are lovely with huge beds. In my wood-burner-warmed room, there was a double shower complete with Morris and James tiles depicting local bird life and a brand-new kitchenette is planned for readiness by the time we go to print. The lodge is made of mud bricks (a combination of mud, sand and straw), which keep the rooms warm even in the coldest weather – something this weedy Brit much appreciated. A new spa pool has just been added and Tania, and Kelvin, have just planted a 1.5 acre truffieres, due to produce in 2011. To be honest, I love it here, it feels like staying with an old friend.
