Peace and Plenty faces the harbour, guarded by Old Albert, the giant Moreton Bay fig, and his attendant pohutukawa trees that make the green of this seaside village so impressive. The house is an elegant Victorian villa, built in 1888, a grand old NZ residence.....

.... You approach up the garden path beside tiers of lavender hedge and roses. Once inside, one’s natural inclination is to follow the high-ceilinged central passage through to the breakfast room with its dresser of blue china. The breakfast table was elegantly laid out when I visited and laden with home-made muesli, lemon and poppy-seed cake and warm plum crumble. If it’s not grown in Judith’s garden, incidentally, most of the produce is local to Devonport. And then out onto the flower-laden back verandah, which overlooks a small but very well-designed tropical garden, a honey-pot for tuis, wax-eyes and wagtails. The house is made of original kauri with Marseilles roof tiles and corbelled chimneys. The rooms are very different and I liked them all, particularly those upstairs with their shuttered doors and little balconies overlooking the Waitemata Harbour and Mt Victoria: other rooms feature brass beds, Tuscan-tiled bathrooms and Victorian slipper baths. The Peace and Plenty is rightly held up as a high-water mark for Auckland accommodation and fully supports environmentally sustainable practices. Stanley the dog will willingly accompany guests on walks. Ferry to City Centre and islands 2 mins' walk.
