My directions told me to go straight across the road into Matawha. This confused me somewhat as all I could see in front of me was a field.....

.... Which appeared to be full of cows. Showing the great pioneering spirit of my British ancestors I ventured forward and at the end of the field, Matawha suddenly loomed in front of me with beautiful wild gardens and flowers abounding. The house does not disappoint. From the infamous double room complete with piano and binoculars to the studio with spa and obligatory candles for atmosphere everything is welcoming and homely. At sunset you can sit in the spa, roll back the windows and gaze out to the sea or the mountain – whichever takes your fancy. You have the run of Jenny’s 900-acre cattle and sheep station and you can tramp down past her horses, over the paddocks to five kilometres of possibly the best surf beach in the Southern Hemisphere. Jenny is an extremely well-travelled and knowledgeable lady, having spent time in Jordan, Europe and South America, often as a boffin on bovines (cattle expert). She’ll also spoil you rotten with a groaning table of wonderful food, much of it from the Matawha organic vegetable garden. You’ll not find anywhere else like this in New Zealand. Raglan, Bridal Veil Falls, Waitomo Caves, horse-riding, hot water beaches and gardens are all nearby.
