The beautiful drive out towards Peach Gully reached its zenith as I crested the brow of a hill and beheld the tantalising spread of Waimarama Beach and Bare Island. Yet I remained just as impressed by the homestead a few hundred yards further on.....

.... The extraordinary 1914 shiplap gardener’s cottage has been wonderfully restored so it maintains oodles of original character. The glowing rimu-panelled walls and rich matai flooring, all salvaged and locally-milled timber, provide a cosy cabin feel that’s heightened by the fire in the lounge. (This seems to have hypnotised the sofa which waits patiently for you and a book to join it.) Every tiny detail has been closely considered from the old-school light switches and fine Egyptian cotton linen to an original claw-foot bath. The cottage was even moved to a new spot to ensure the sea views. Here you can swim in the heated pool, get active on the astroturf tennis court, dabble with a bit of pétanque or pop down the road to the beach for a surf. The tennis court is floodlit so, if you fancy a game at night, you don’t have to rely on the moon... although, I am told the night sky here is rather spectacular which explains Waimarama’s Maori translation “moon on the water”. They have even got a waterfall which I got very excited about. Kristal tells me that people love it, especially with the plunge pool and especially in summer. So there you go. You can hike to your heart's content and discover a few geological and Maori wonders on the way.
