Retiro Park Lodge certainly does justice to the picturesque central park in Madrid after which it was named. Many a walking track wind their way around the petite vineyard, olive and almond groves of the 50-acre farm.....

.... Donkeys, llamas and alpacas (all named according to the year in which they were born) will befriend you if you feed them and I’m sure that Flavia, a sleek, bouncy greyhound with the enthusiasm of a puppy, will accompany you on walks if you let her. Robbert has lived for over 20 years in Spain and has the collector gene. You’ll find objects from all over the world that capture the attention and imagination. A vast opulent bathroom in the main house echoes the Mediterranean in vivid terracotta and deep blues, while the impressive barn conversion is fresh and light and allows for a little more independence. Robbert and Victor encourage guests to dine with them on their first night, and I certainly had a fantastic time shooting the breeze with them over a leisurely meal. The couple share a sharp sense of humour and an enthusiasm for the world that will keep you chatting for hours. Since Victor is a trained chef I can assure you that both food and company will be wonderful, and I will be sorely jealous. The lodge is only 15 minutes from Nelson with its numerous galleries, restaurants and activities. But Retiro’s Spanish translation is ‘retreat’ and I would take the hint. Your hosts speak English, Spanish and Dutch. Tours of Abel-Tasman can be arranged through here. Wireless broadband.[i/]
