Seven waterfalls cascading over black granite boulders through dense rainforest into deep clear pools – aka ‘The Seven Stairs to Heaven’. Here are 64 acres of private paradise for you to explore at your leisure.....

.... Further down, the creek weaves and gurgles through rambling gardens, past native trees, exotic flora and Monet-esque lily ponds. "The best garden is a well-kept wilderness," is one of the sayings at Rapaura. This is especially true as the gardens have been restored to their former glory after being devastated by a ‘weather bomb’ in 2002. Semi-camouflaged by native tree-ferns the lodge combines antiques, bright colours and objets d’art from the owner’s time in Hong Kong. I loved the bold Chinese calligraphy that greets you when you enter and cooed over the porcelain elephants bearing potted ferns in the soothing setting of the breakfast room. I stayed in the cottage where I found every creature comfort had been taken care of, from extremely comfortable sofas and bed to top-quality linens and fresh coffee in the kitchen. We ate a delicious dinner in the lodge, eating in the dining room with its full-length sliding doors looking out onto the wilderness below. Simply put, an amazing place. Sally and her son Sacha have also opened Koru at Rapaura, an inviting café serving all their home-cooked favourites with rare NZ flavours you'll struggle to find elsewhere. Local art is also displayed on site.
