Dave has created this cave-cottage mainly, I think, because he wanted to see the look on your face when you arrive. The cottage is literally woven into the hillside, the roof covered with grass.....

.... The ‘cave mouth’ opens onto a deck where two chairs have been placed as if with tweezers. Another few yards and you’d be plummeting down the cliff to your own rocky cove below. There is a path that descends more gently, if more slowly. The cove, leaned over by old pohutukawa trees clutching the cliff-face with talon-like roots, has kayaks for exploring the nearby sea-caves. Or one of Dave’s great pleasures is to take guests out diving or crayfish-hunting. Dave’s many hats of expertise include that of master-builder/architect…but he was also no less than NZ skateboard champion. If a thing’s worth doing….The cottage is a single open-plan room with a low bed looking straight out to sea. There is a blue-glass shower behind the scenes and a sauna. Small bottles of champagne sit in the fridge alongside the excellent breakfast provisions. If you can book Crab Cove stay as long as you can. No wife/husband/partner will be able to repay you elsewhere without spending their life savings. Simple yet sensational. (The instinct to call it The Crabb Cave of Crab Cove must have been hard to resist!)
