Though many guesthouses like to promote themselves as 'a home away from home', very few actually are. And so it was with no little delight that while rootling around in Kerikeri for GG gems, I unearthed Stone Store Lodge, a clear exception to the rule.....

.... Clearly not a man to shy away from a challenge, Richard sold his farm to spend a couple of years sailing the high seas in the South Pacific, and then when the time was right, he returned to shore, trading water for a patch of land on which to build himself a lodge. And here it is, teetering on the hillside behind town looking out over sub-tropical native bush to Kerikeri’s famed historic Stone Store by the watery inlet below. Glimpses of Richard’s former life are framed on the walls in daughter Lucy’s fantastic photographs, an exotic mix of colour and cultures and endless points of conversation. Purposefully designed for privacy and utmost comfort, the rooms, like the rest of the house, are beautifully presented and elegantly ethno-chic, with huge walk-in showers, flowers by the bed, floor-to-ceiling windows to soak up the early morning sunshine and a private outdoor bath for starry nights. You'll have the run of the house with its many spots inside and out to sit and linger and there's even an old piano in the corner. This is a happy place that makes packing to leave a dire business performed with reluctant step and a heavy heart! Wireless broadband.
