The Ponsonby Belgian Beer Café

Ponsonby

Bars

This Belgian beer café was recommended to me by real-life Belgian-Aucklanders, Bart and Thérèse from Ascot Parnell. With its distinctly European-brasserie atmosphere, the Ponsonby is now famous for its moules-frites-bière combo. Housed in what used to be the old Ponsonby Post Office, a full range of Belgian beers on tap and tasty Belgian cuisine have replaced its postage stamps and mail boxes. There’s a great selection of Lambic (fruit), Trappist (monk) and (Belgian favourite) Kwak beers to go with their delicious pots of mussels and fries.

  • Prices: Mussels, served by the steaming pot: $17. Mussel platters: $16.50. Beers $7.15 - $14.50 a bottle.

Intoxicatingly fresh and healthy aromas will seemingly lift you up from the busy downtown street and into this invigorating, oasis-like vegetarian café and juice bar. One Tree Grill

Restaurants

This is a posh-nosh venue without the attendant snobbery. Staff are ultra-friendly, and ultra-knowledgeable about the food, the wine and the combination of both. Guy Malyon (yes, he is a distant cousin and no I didn’t let that cloud my judgement, honest governor) has nurtured a casual, neighbourhood-eatery atmosphere whilst at the same time creating a top-notch menu. The New Zealand fish blew my mind: spiced snapper fillet served on sweet-corn fritters, sashimi timbale, and tea-crusted rare tuna loin, all as fresh as a springtime daisy. (Incidentally, One Tree Grill is a pun on the restaurant’s location in residential One Tree Hill.) Dinner is served Monday to Saturday from 5pm; lunch is Monday to Friday from 11.30am.

  • Prices: Fixed menu from $55.

Bambina

Auckland

Restaurants

Ponsonby Road spills over with boutique designers, fine dining and wine bars, and on Sunday morning it felt like the place to see and be seen – and nowhere more so than Bambina. Get there early enough and grab a seat on the big square table so you can rustle away behind all the weekend newspapers. Extensive menu and reliably excellent food.

Sahaa

Auckland

Restaurants

This superb little restaurant is a real off-the-beaten-track, local haunt. You don’t often come across quality Algerian, Morrocan and Tunisian flavours in NZ. In fact this is the only one of its kind on the whole North Island, something that makes Sahaa’s menu shine even brighter. Naturally, tagines are the specialty here and the setting is positively North African exotic with a private, traditional low-seating area, a family dining room complete with Moroccan fountain, colourful pottery on the walls and dainty glass cups from which to sip your mint tea.

  • Prices: Entrées $10 - $24, mains $20 - $26.

Number 5

Auckland Central

Restaurants

With its strict ‘life is too short to drink bad wine’ philosophy, Number 5 is already a winner for me. Set in an old redbrick house with burgundy walls, dancing fires and cosy, candlelit dining areas, the setting here is intimate and warm. Food, such as double-roasted duck on creamy potato mash and caramelised citrus jus or white veal rack, is beautifully presented and completely delicious. And, of course, a fabulous (and mostly New Zealand sourced) wine list is accompanied by a jolly sommelier to help you make your choice.

Number 5
  • Prices: Open Mon - Sat 6pm until late. Starters $13 - $18.50, mains $25.50 - $37.50 and desserts $13.50.

St Tropez Bistro and Wine Bar

Parnell

Restaurants

St Tropez is refreshingly laid-back for the fine restaurant that it is. Jean-Christophe serves some of the best French food in the country, decadent and oh so good. Order a gloriously rich pâté with fresh crusty bread, then confit de canard or poisson Grenobloise and – voilà! – let yourself be transported to the South of France and feel its glow until your last spoonful of tarte tatin with chantilly cream goes down. Put simply by an NZ Herald reviewer, “they know about the food and the wine, and why it is what it is”.

St Tropez Bistro and Wine Bar
  • Prices: Open for dinner, plus lunch on Fridays only. Mains $25.50 - $29.50. Desserts $11.50. Open Monday to Saturday, Sundays only. Function bookings avaialble on request.

Non Solo Pizza

Parnell

Restaurants

Walk into Non Solo Pizza and prepare yourself not just for an edible but a visual feast as well. With a marble fireplace stacked with logs at one end, a delicious food selection at the other and one of the loveliest outdoor courtyards in town at the back, this is definitely a place to feel good in. From contorni, antipasti, pizza, pasta, insalate, secondi and dolci, all the food is as properly Italian as it sounds… and, of course, as authentically delicious.

  • Prices: Pizza $21.50 - $24.50. Pasta: main $24.50. Salads and other dishes $7.50 - $30.50. Desserts and cheeses $10.50 - $15.00.

Auckland Highlights

  • Get sailing on the Waitemata Harbour in this the 'City of Sails'; even better if you can bag a space on one of the America's Cup yachts that operate here.
  • Learn about the history, geology and wildlife of New Zealand at the Auckland Museum. Do this on a Sunday morning and spend the afternoon (during summer months) picnicking at the Domain, watching a free jazz concert.
