Seismic Gastrobar

Rotorua

Restaurants

Seismic, meaning: earthquakes and earthshakes in the geothermal history of the region; and a blend of Maori and Croatian heritage in the owners. This funky little gastrobar serves an adventurous lunch and dinner menu, an extensive brunch list, and, after the kitchens have been closed, you can take the wine list outside on to the terraces and pour over it to your heart's content.

  • Prices: Starters from $6.50. Mains from $19.50 - $32. Weekdays 11.30am - 10pm (kitchen closes). Bar licensed till 3am.

Bistro 1284

Rotorua

Restaurants

When I popped in to Bistro 1284 a local lady was excitedly discussing birthday feast plans with Damon who was taking every detail on board. She gushed about the lamb and the wine, and I tried my best to look like the sort of person you’d want to invite to a birthday party. As a lamb and beef ambassador, and consistently voted as Rotorua’s best restaurant, all meat dishes are stamped with the ‘hallmark of excellence.’ Try the slow-roast lamb belly with whipped potato, green peas and jus for size or get down there and start your own party.

Bistro 1284
  • Prices: Entrées $16.50 - $17.50, mains $31-$33, desserts $15.

Sirocco's Café Restaurant

Rotorua

Restaurants

A cosy café-restaurant with the kind of atmosphere I could have happily enjoyed all afternoon if work (it’s a hard job but someone’s got to do it) hadn’t caused me to press on. Sirocco's offers a Mediterranean medley of modern food from pasta dishes to paella. I opted for a simple but scrumptious vegetarian dish, which arrived promptly, piled high with roasted vegetables and flavour. Choose to munch outside on the deck or dine amongst local art warmed by a pot-bellied fire.

You and Me Restaurant

Rotorua

Restaurants

This not-to-be-missed dining experience is very easy to miss if you don’t know where to look. Eyes peeled for the tiny glowing sign above the not-so-obvious doorway and staircase that leads up to the swanky first-floor restaurant. Once through the portal ‘You and Me’ has all the fine attributes that a good restaurant should have. All the locals know where it is, and now you do too, so make sure you join them.

  • Prices: Mains $32 - $35.
  • Contact: 1119 Pukuatua St, Rotorua
  • Tel: 07-347-6178

Slowfish

Tauranga

Restaurants

Slowfish is influenced by the slow food movement, and why would you want to hurry, sitting opposite Mt Maunganui Main Beach, looking over the sea? To encourage you to linger (as if any such encouragement is needed), Josh and Brigitte offer a smorgasbord of delights. Unfortunately I chose the 'energy salad', stuffed full of good nutrition and off I went... but if you had time, what a delight it would be to kick the sand out of your shoes and indulgently wind down.
