The Raspberry Cafe

This quaint Christchurch café is a big favourite with GG owner Merrillies. You can sit outside in the sun or, if its chilly, warm your tootsies by the fire whilst sampling fresh berries, puddings and yummy cakes.

  • Prices: could you please give us some basic prices? Thank you.

Niaroo Café

Kaikoura

Cafés & delis

Set in a lush garden centre, Niaroo Café is quite a find in the farming town of Levin. I sat in the sun and lapped up some tasty 'Eggs Montreal': poached eggs and salmon on sourdough bread washed down with a strong long-black. The waitresses were friendly and owner Mark Cohen’s menu extensive. The chocolate cake looked especially gooey and tempting... if only I’d had room.

  • Prices: $14.50 for coffee and 'Eggs Montreal'.

Hislops Café

Kaikoura

Cafés & delis

So it is possible for healthy to be tasty! Hislops Café excels in everything wholesome: home-made soup of the day arrives steaming alongside a slice of Hislops' wholemeal bread (made with the finest, fresh-milled flour), while warm wood-roasted salmon reclines on a bed of pumpkin and kumara rosti. The list of fresh, organic flavours and produce goes on. I stopped here every single time I passed through Kaikoura, not because I’m particularly healthy, quite the contrary in fact - I couldn’t resist the fab coffee and cakes.

Hislops Café
  • Prices: Breakfast $5.50 - $18; lunch $14.90 - $22.50; dinner, entrées $5 - $15.50, mains $16.50 - $39, desserts $10.50 - $13.50. Prices an indication only.

Athena Olive Groves

Waipara Valley

Farms

In Greek mythology, the Goddess Athena struck the bare soil with her spear and caused an olive tree to spring up; her useful gift to the people of a city. The people were so delighted with the tree that Zeus gave Athena the city and named it after her (Athens). Equally taken with this godly fruit are the Gunn family who farm and traditionally cold-press it into some of the world's best (and Canterbury’s first) extra-virgin olive oil. Book in for one of Roger’s unique tours or pop in to taste and buy.

Ma Maison Restaurant

Akaroa

Restaurants

Wonderfully positioned right on the harbour waters, this busy restaurant has a lovely garden and a warm open fire inside for chillier wintery days. On the menu when I visited were roast chicken with pecorino dauphinoise, NZ beef fillet with horseradish rosti and, of course, fresh Akaroa salmon, rounded off (and I think I do mean rounded) with scrumptious sticky toffee pudding and brandy snaps or a decadent chocolate fondue with strawberries for dipping.

  • Prices: Starters $10 - $15, mains $25.50 - $30, desserts $10.50 - $14.50.

C'est La Vie

Akaroa

Restaurants

Rave reviews abound about C’est La Vie, a Banks Peninsula institution. Host and owner Magdalena serves typically delicious French fare in copper cooking pans in her tiny, warmly-lit and homely restaurant. An eclectic combination of hanging Christmas lights, stuffed toy rabbits and guests’ comments are scrawled on its walls for decoration. Not that any is needed for the food here is so fabulous that it shouts for itself. The duck à l’orange is legendary and the venison in red wine sauce with poached pear is fast becoming so. Seafood from the harbour, including large green-lipped mussels and gurnard, are gathered in a creamy medley and local fruits are employed in yummy desserts like pear tart and a chocolate sauce with fresh kiwi and feijoas. Do book ahead, as there are only two sittings each night and seats fill fast.

  • Prices: Main courses $28 - $30. There is a wine list but you can also BYO.

Rossendale Restaurant and Winery

Christchurch

Restaurants

Set in a restored gatekeeper’s lodge and within 15 minutes of Christchurch’s city centre, Rossendale comes highly recommended. Pop in to quaff some of their fine Chardonnay and Pinot Noir before sampling the restaurant’s extensive menu that ranges from seafood chowder to red Thai prawns. The Devonshire teas sound pretty tempting too, after all this is more English-than-England-itself Christchurch.

  • Prices: Set menu from $55.

Strawberry Fare

Christchurch

Restaurants

This is it… I’ve found it… heaven in a diner! Strawberry Fare’s substantial menu spans breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper but the reason you really go there is for the desserts. Don’t get me wrong, the savoury options are terrific, but the sweets... gee whizz!... the sweets will melt the heart of even the most austere pudding fundi. It’s the chocolate that got me. In fact ‘the ultimate chocolate dessert’ consisting of chocolate fudge brownie, chocolate mousse, chocolate ice cream, dark chocolate pâté and berry compôte. It’s too wicked to eat on your own but the romantic retro setting means two's perfect company.

  • Prices: Dessert prices range from $14.50 - $17.50. Breakfast prices range from $6.50 - $17.50, lunch from $5.50 - $31.50 and evening from $5.50 - $32.50.

Annie's Wine Bar and Restaurant

Christchurch

Restaurants

Good eclectic New Zealand food and a whole lot of wine. Annie’s wine list has 50 Canterbury and hard-foraged-for New Zealand wines, all excellent and available by the glass, as well as a vast local and international cellar. The restaurant is set in an old Victorian building that now forms part of the Arts Centre. Casual yet classy, this is a place where you could relax all afternoon with a couple of chums and a (few) bottle(s) of wine.

Simo's Moroccan Restaurant

Christchurch

Restaurants

A Kiwi friend in the know divulged Simo’s secret high-street location (which I had walked past countless times and never noticed) when he escorted our GG team to dinner. True to the Moroccan way “eating is never done alone or in a rush” so we shared the pleasure of Moroccan Simo’s exquisite food for the entire evening. I ate so much I became one with my chair. Be sure to say a friendly ‘salaam’ to chef Simo whose character spreads as wide as his smile.

Simo's Moroccan Restaurant
  • Prices: Tapas $10, entrée $13 - $18, mains $29 - $34, dessert $7.50 - $12.50. Vegetarian and gluten free options available. Set menus available $55 or $65 a head.

Curator's House Restaurant and Café

Christchurch

Restaurants

It’s not just the flowers and trees that fill the air with floating aromas in Christchurch’s botanical gardens. The black-beamed original Curator’s House, now transformed into a charming restaurant, serves fresh-from-the-garden New Zealand food. A hint of Spain wafts from the tapas menu, which is the perfect choice for al-fresco, afternoon nibblers. These guys are dedicated to the principles of environmental sustainability, which in short, means they grow most of their own fruit and veg – you don’t get much fresher than that.

Hay's Restaurant

Christchurch

Restaurants

Celia and Allan Hay do lamb like no other. They farm their own sheep at their Pigeon Bay family property and use fresh produce from local suppliers. This is innovative New Zealand cuisine spiced with a sprinkle of Asia and a dash of the Mediterranean. Trust these guys and go for the lamb special served medium rare. It may come chargrilled with a green pea coulis, white truffle oil and glazed Jersey bennies or with apricot-chutney-infused jus, roast Portobello mushrooms, mint jelly and dauphinoise potatoes… the possibilities are endless and scrumptious.

Le Bon Bolli Brasserie and Restaurant

Christchurch

Restaurants

The feel of this great restaurant is of Paris at the turn of the last century. Or so I imagined as I made myself comfy in the cosy, red brasserie downstairs and ordered coq au vin (the best I’ve had – even in France) and a decadently French garlic fondue with baguette, so utterly delicious that you won’t mind sleeping alone for the night. There is a fine dining restaurant upstairs too, also very French and very wonderful. This is the kind of restaurant that gets almost embarrassingly showered with awards, and justifiably so.

  • Prices: Brasserie open from 10am - 11pm. Various salads, mussel dishes, bruschettas, entrements and mains from $14.50 - $32. Amazing desserts $9.50.

Malabar Restaurant

Hanmer Springs

Restaurants

Entirely unique and renowned for its impeccable service and quality, the Malabar is primarily distinguished by its traditional-twist dishes. A team of chefs from across the world bring together the best of Europe, India, South-East Asia and the Middle East to form a taste-sensational menu. Asian fusion/Indian dining is how they describe it.

Rustic Café and Tapas Bar

Hanmer Springs

Restaurants

A family-run café that excels in coffee, cakes and nibbly eats. Perch outside on wooden tables and plough your way through a multitude of tapas-style dishes while enjoying Hanmer’s unique alpine village vibe. Well, that’s what I used to do each time I took a break from driving the Lewis Pass (which equated to quite a few times after 4 months). Even if you’re just passing by it’s worth the 10-minute drive from the main highway. Go on… we all need a coffee break sometimes (that was my excuse anyway).

The Old Post Office Restaurant

Hanmer Springs

Restaurants

Gone are the days when brown paper packages tied up with string used to pass through the hands of the post office staff. Now the fully-converted restaurant ensures that food (one of my favourite things) is signed, sealed and delivered to your place mat. The classic New Zealand cuisine, specialising in lamb and beef, remains in tune with the historic surroundings and is excellent.

Nins Bin

Kaikoura

Restaurants

Sea-fresh crayfish served from a caravan by the side of the road, overlooking the wild Pacific Ocean. You don’t get much more real than this. Carry on the State Highway One north of Kaikoura that hugs the rugged coast. After a 15-minute drive, you’ll come to a layby on your right-hand side. Stop, enjoy the scenery and wolf down some rich, fleshy crayfish. Delicious.

Hapuku Lodge Restaurant

Kaikoura

Restaurants

Looking up from the rustic wooden tables in Hapuku Lodge's native garden, the view of Kaikoura's spectacular mountains is stunning. With its coastal position and deer-mown grassy surround it’s not surprising that the restaurant at Hapuku Lodge specialises in venison and local seafood (including live crayfish). Formerly an award-winning cafe, this restaurant continues to use the finest local and organic produce and the result is pure and simple - a great meal in a beautiful place.

Green Dolphin Restaurant and Bar

Kaikoura

Restaurants

Matt has inherited Mum (and chef) Faye’s special recipes and refined them with his own food-loving stamp. The Green Dolphin looks out over the rocky bay of Kaikoura and is always aglow with cheerful customers and staff. The unfalteringly fine seafood is an obvious choice here with famous Kaikoura crayfish picked fresh from the sea. Matt cooks it to perfection and you’ll eat it to perfection after a briefing on how to dismantle it with perfection from a bubbly waiter. Happiness breeds happiness at the Green Dolphin and you will eat each lovingly-prepared mouthful with a smile on your lips.

French Farm Winery

Akaroa

Wine

This lovely winery has a distinct feel of provincial France with its terracotta buildings, rose-filled garden terraces, lavender bushes and vines that sweep down to the azure blue waters of the harbour. All of which are great washed down with a glass of chardonnay or pinot noir from their barrels.

Hurunui River Wines

Hawarden

Wine

Trundling off the track is well worth it for this small-scale winery. The vineyard is part of a larger sheep and cattle farm so you can drink up the true Canterbury countryside whilst swigging free samples of home-brewed wine. The dinky café serves a superb antipasto platter and cheese or breadboards, a perfect accompaniment to a sunny afternoon and a bottle of wine. If a cold beer or coffee and cake is more your thing you won’t be disappointed. A playground, sandpit and pétanque pitch provide entertainment for under-age younglings and young-at-heart grown-ups.

After living, breathing, making, tasting, studying, writing about and judging wine since the early 1970’s the Donaldson family seriously know their stuff and have the credentials to prove it.
