Boat trips

Fancy some trout for supper? If so, you may need to enlist Bruce and Angela’s help because you can’t buy the fish in shops in NZ but there are many restaurants where you can BYO (trout). Though famous for its brown and rainbow varieties (it’s not unusual to land a 5lb one), there is a lot more to this lake than just fishes and rods. Good old Kiwi hospitality, magnificent scenery and Maori rock carvings are among the highlights of a day spent boating with the Christoffersens. Fishing tackle and tuition are provided.

  • Prices: Charter rates from $360 for half day to $800 for a full-day hire with lunch provided.

Central Plateau Highlights

  • Get seriously adventurous on Taupo's great lake. You can fish in it, swim in it, dive in it, boat on it and skydive over it.
  • Drive the volcanic loop highway (it's famous for a reason), take on the volcano-crested Tongariro National Park, breeze around Taupo's thermal parks or fly over the lot. Fire and ice come together in an astounding way at the North Island's raging core.
