Pacifica

This is a Napier favourite. It’s set near the seafront and, as the name suggests, seafood features highly on the menu. Try yellow-fin sashimi, or fleshy John Dory, rounded off by a blackberry parfait with fresh blueberries, raspberries and, of course, kiwi fruit. New owners Rebecca and Jeremy Rameka took over recently so expect an enthusiastic welcome. Dinner from 6pm until lete Tuesday through to Sunday. Reservations highly recommended.

Regale Eatery

This small and friendly eatery in Napier’s bohemian, art deco district of Ahuriri serves delicious breakfasts and lunches. Westshore Fish Café

Napier

Restaurants

“Your pleasure is our pleasure” is th mantra at Peter and Hieke's Westshore Fish Café. Hieke insisted I try a portion of their beautiful fish and good ol’ mushy peas, which I wolfed down with gusto, accompanied by some cheerful banter from local regulars. I left with the parting phrase, “if you’re happy tell your friends, if you’re not... tell us” ringing in my ears. This may help to explain why they’re so inundated with everyone's friends and why I’m telling you.

Westshore Fish Café
  • Prices: Starters $6.90 - $8.90, mains $9.90 - 19.90, desserts $5.50, kids meals $6.90. Vegetarian and non-fish lovers options available.

Hatton Estate Vineyard & Winery

Hastings

Wine

Hatton Estate recently won a top New Zealand trophy for its Cabernet Blend, and it exports to international clients including Simpson’s-in-the-Strand. But don’t expect the rarefied atmosphere of some too-grand-for-its-own-good Old World vineyard. This is New Zealand and they do things differently here. Owner Michael is happy to hold ad hoc wine tastings - he wants to demystify wine and encourage customers to have confidence in their taste buds.

Hatton Estate Vineyard & Winery
  • Prices: Wines from $19.95.

Ngatarawa Winery

Hastings

Wine

I feel the need to blow the trumpet on behalf of this modest winery, as they seem too nice to blow their own. The picnic-perfect lawn frames a long rectangular lily pond. Great wine and a friendly face at the cellar door sealed the deal for me.

Te Awa Winery

Hastings

Wine

If you take the native vineyard-set gardens and match the “head-turning wines of exceptional balance and class” (quaffed and quoth one happy customer) with one of New Zealand’s best winery restaurants, you’ve sketched an image of the not-to-be-missed Te Awa Winery experience. To complete the picture you'd better head down to the Gimblett Gravels wine-growing region of Hawke’s Bay and start browsing the menu as soon as you can. With such an array of stunning dishes and wines on offer you may be choosing for some time.

Clearview Estate Winery and Restaurant

Hastings

Wine

Partial to small places big in atmosphere? Then you’ll share the opinion of one of the many delighted Clearview customers who rated the fare of locally-sourced seafood, meat and seasonal produce (and home-grown herbs, olives, citrus and avocados) among the best in the world. A courtyard dining area and the long dapple-shaded tables lounging among the grapevines are perfect for lazy summer afternoons. Rustic barrels, wagon wheels and other hints of the surrounding farm community enforce the relaxed village vibe established in 1989 and continued by the owners. This is a wonderful taste of rural New Zealand. Near to Cape Kidnappers gannet colony.

Clearview Estate Winery and Restaurant
  • Prices: Entrées $10, mains $28, sides $5. All Clearview wines available by the glass from $6.30 - $10.20 and by the bottle from $25 - $45.
