Gannet Beach Adventures

Hastings

Adventure activities

Kids and grown-ups will love this mild and information-packed adventure. A cheery orange true-vintage tractor trundles its comfy trailer along the cliff-lined beach to Cape Kidnappers, the world’s largest accessible gannet nesting site. As the longest standing visitor attraction in Hawke’s Bay (these guys have been dishing out facts on the intriguing gannets and fantastic local geology for 54 years) their knowledge and experience is inspiring.

National Aquarium of New Zealand

Napier

Aquariums

Perched on the Pacific Ocean, New Zealand’s top aquarium is home to a multitude of East Coast marine creatures from sea-horses to sting rays. Try and drag some children along; that way you have an excuse to go round and round on the travelator which spirals beneath the Ocenarium. Best of all, if you’re qualified, you can go diving in one of the tanks.

Tractor Trips, Gannet Beach Adventures

Napier

Nature & wildlife

Cape Kidnappers is a world-famous gannet-nesting site. It’s practically inaccessible, but this doesn’t put Rod and Dayna Heaps off. With the help of their trusty 1949 Minneapolis Molines tractors they take tourists on trailer-rides to see the awesome birds. Incidentally, it is a locally owned and operated family business. The couple have run the business since 1991 after purchasing it from Rod's uncle, the original founder.

  • Prices: Adults: $33; children (3 - 15 years): $19; under 2s: free

Clearview Estate Winery and Restaurant

Hastings

Wine

Partial to small places big in atmosphere? Then you’ll share the opinion of one of the many delighted Clearview customers who rated the fare of locally-sourced seafood, meat and seasonal produce (and home-grown herbs, olives, citrus and avocados) among the best in the world. A courtyard dining area and the long dapple-shaded tables lounging among the grapevines are perfect for lazy summer afternoons. Rustic barrels, wagon wheels and other hints of the surrounding farm community enforce the relaxed village vibe established in 1989 and continued by the owners. This is a wonderful taste of rural New Zealand. Near to Cape Kidnappers gannet colony.
