The Mussel Pot Restaurant

With its iconic, giant pot of mussels on the roof, you can’t miss the Mussel Pot in Havelock, 'mussel capital of the world'. An idyllic garden sets the scene in summer while the warmth emitted from friendly staff and an atmospheric fire keeps things cosy in winter.

The Store Kekerengu

Kekerengu

Restaurants

The tiny town of Kekerengu ultimately is ‘The Store’ and you should devote a good chunk of your day to a leisurely lunch and exploration of this coastal find. Equidistant from Kaikoura and Blenheim the café-restaurant (and still functioning post-office) forms a naturally perfect stop along the striking and rugged coastal drive. Whether you make a laid-back gourmet meal of it (crayfish seems to be the order of the day) or opt for a briefer coffee and delectable cake stop, the position is astounding. Inspired by the rustic, nautical décor I took the opportunity to write a few postcards home and sent them on their way.

The Store Kekerengu
  • Prices: Cabinet food $3 - $8, blackboard menu $11 - $90, average blackboard price $16.50.
  • Contact: SH1, Kekerengu

Herzog Winery and Luxury Restaurant

Blenheim

Wine

Already renowned at home for their restaurants and winery, Swiss imports Thérese and Hans Herzog and their team of top European chefs uprooted and packed their fantastic reputations to replant them here in Blenheim’s perfect soil. Recently voted the 'best restaurant’ in New Zealand, Herzog is undisputedly fine on all counts. A very cheery Nicola showed me around the vineyard whose position is absolutely idyllic, food divine and wine meanwhile, ah the wine…. (I)Bistro is open for casual lunches and restaurant for fine dining in the evening, both from Oct - May only.(P)

Worth a wine tasting and view-gazing stop. The distinctive salmon-pink building sits high on the Brookby Ridge appreciating an unsurpassed spread of Wairau Valley views. Skip up the castle-style turret to make the most of the view and eat inside or outside. Definitely one for the wine tour.

Bladen Estate

Renwick

Wine

A tiny and utterly charming owner-run winery where 100% Kiwi wines are sipped in the jovial company of the hosts. This is the kind of place that hangs an apologetic ‘sold out’ sign on the door when the supply of pinot gris and sauvignon blanc have been a bit too popular (always a hazard when you produce such great wine).

  • Prices: Wine prices range from $18 - $30 a bottle.
  • Contact: Conders Bend Road, Renwick, Marlborough
  • Tel: 03-572-9417

Grove Mill Winery

Renwick

Grove Mill’s philosophy is to produce the highest quality wine in a way that results in minimum impact on the environment. Native gardens and a wetlands sanctuary both feature on site and are home to a clatter of birds and the southern bell frog (Grove Mill’s green-limbed mascot and symbol). Indulge in a cheeseboard from the cellar door, taste and learn from the unique vine library and browse the New Zealand contemporary artworks on sale at the Diversion Gallery (also at the cellar door).

Grove Mill Winery
