Marlborough Sounds Adventure Company

Picton

Adventure activities

Whether you want to paddle, mountain bike, trek or dabble in all three, Marlborough Sounds Adventure Co makes it happen in safe, enlightening and pleasurable style. Due to Marlborough’s temperate climate the Queen Charlotte walk (a coastal panoramic feast of a track that’s not steep but relatively long) can be tackled all year round and takes 4 - 5 days. These wise and long-standing chiefs of the sea-kayaking world are more than qualified to help you navigate yourself in the Sounds and will create a trip to suit your time-frame.

Myths and Legends Eco-Tours

Picton

Cultural tours

The old Maoris believe that stories stimulate dreams and if we were to lose the ability to dream our spirits would die. Pete and Takutai keep the art of story-telling alive on board Tutanekai, their 75-year-old kauri boat. They visit remote bays, islands and inlets and guide you on bush walks through native forest. I left time and inhibitions ashore and relaxed completely in the company of this fascinating couple, who are wise in all things Maori and environmental. Propped on pillows, wrapped in a blanket, the Marlborough Sounds - dolphins, seals, bird colonies, beach and the sea itself - unfurled around me. The pulse of tourism beats very slow here. You will step lightly away from the experience with a head packed with knowledge and wonder how it got there.

Wilderness Guides

Picton

Guided Tours

If a day is all you have, these guys can more than fill it for you. In fact, I would recommend allowing a number of days to play with Wilderness Guides. Steve and Juliet have grown up in the Marlborough Sound, living and working in the giant natural adventure park they call home. The Gibbonses have the know-how to wring maximum enjoyment out of any track, kayak or mountain bike trail in the Sound (they also cover the Heaphy Track and Nelson Lakes). They look after your packs, lunch, gear, accommodation and anything else you may need. Great fun and great value; “I got more than my value for money. Put your prices up!” demanded one disgruntled guest.

Wilderness Guides

Wine Tours by Bike

Blenheim

Wine

The cycling oenophile is in their element amongst the flat vineyards of Marlborough country. Virtually no hills, beautiful scenery, and boutique vineyards by the dozen. There are over 30 vineyards that can be explored by bike within a 10km radius of Blenheim, reached by quiet back roads and vineyard tracks, and ranging from the big names to the family affair. Fortunately, along with all the usual cycle-gear, Nigel and Helen supply wine panniers for you to stow away that odd cellar-door purchase. They also will pick you up and drop you off from your local accommodation and replace or repair your bike should you breakdown during the tour.

Wine Tours by Bike
  • Prices: Up to 4 hours bike rental $40 per person; over 4 hours and up to 8 hours NZ $55 per person.
