Café Affair of Nelson

Nelson

Cafés & delis

My steak arrived sizzling upon a hot rock at this exciting eatery. Surrounded by landscape-inspired décor and eclectic Kiwi memorabilia I was tempted to complete the atmosphere with one of the carefully-selected wines, but a lone inspector shouldn’t drink (ahem, well...). Families are welcome here and children entertained leaving parents to grab some lunch or just a fragment of peace and a civilised coffee.

Totally Roasted Coffeehouse, Roastery and Café

Golden Bay

Cafés/galleries

Jo’s passion is coffee. We’re talking single origin, fair-trade, hand-roasted (currently from East Timor) coffee, the sort that slips down like silk and perks you up for hours. Chris’s passion is food. He aims to “create food that makes you feel good when you eat it” with simple, clean and sharp flavours. Mix all this with an on-site gallery, sculpture-stocked garden and funky atmosphere and you have a unique café experience that’s totally worth a visit.

The Naked Possum!

Golden Bay

Restaurants

Possums are a pest in New Zealand, so the eco-tannery at ‘The Naked Possum!’ has no qualms about turning them into leather lampshades and cushions. Jocelyn and Grant’s unique eco-tourism venture began with their passion to protect the rata trees from being destroyed by possums. Now you can browse the multitude of fur and leather products in the possum shop, treat yourself to a potted rata tree from the native nursery and enjoy a hearty meal in the smoky atmosphere of the bushman’s fire. The café (handily found at the start of the Kaituna walking track) specialises in wild game meats with fresh garden salads, but there are great vegetarian and gluten-free options available too. Open 7 days a week: 9am till 10pm in summer and 10am till 5pm in winter.

The Naked Possum!
  • Prices: Meals between $10 and $35 in the café/restaurant. Possum leather products – $10 - $2,000.

The Mussel Inn

Golden Bay

Restaurants

Just a great country pub. The Mussel Inn doesn’t aspire to be anything more that its laid-back, spirited self. Within the NZ-woolshed-Aussie-farmhouse setting they serve good pub food, locally-brewed booze and home-made lemonade or ginger beer for those abstaining from the hard stuff. Live music features regularly on a Friday or Saturday night and all original artists, whether they’re big, small, local, international, folk, jazz, blues, reggae, pop or world, are presented in the same chilled-out manner. There are no pokies, TVs or pool tables here: “when you come to enjoy the music – you come to enjoy the music”.

Flax Restaurant and Bar

Mapua

Restaurants

Everybody raves about the ‘pork belly’ at Flax; in fact, everybody raves about Flax full-stop. I was in Mapua too early in the day to sample the delights of the restaurant and bar myself but, with countless recommendations and graphic descriptions of their fabulous dishes ringing in my ears, I felt as if I’d personally savoured each one. To torment myself further I explored their waterside location, browsed the delicious-sounding menu, pressed my nose up against their glass front and peered in at the swish interior. Plan your schedule better than mine to include dinner here.

Hopgoods Restaurant and Bar

Nelson

Restaurants

I was uncontrollably drawn into this little restaurant. My morning attempt to stroll past was halted by a sun-shaded street table, flat white and a healthy bowl of home-made muesli, yoghurt and honey. It’s all about quality and taste at Hopgood’s and I savoured every mouthful while watching Nelson life amble by. Kevin Hopgood, a fellow pom, projects the cheer of his surroundings into the European, contemporary food and atmosphere. I just wish I’d had time to stop for dinner as well.

Hopgoods Restaurant and Bar

Browse the arts, crafts and local labels then indulge in one of the Grape Escape café’s ‘exceedingly good cakes'. Woollaston Estate

Nelson

Wine

Philip and Chan teamed up with Glenn and Renee in 2000 to form Woollaston Estates, three separate, beautifully set and special wineries. Their shared love of the Nelson area, and of course good wine, has led to quality wine-making that continues to develop. You can sample the wines from Burke’s Bank and Kelling Road at Mahana, a deceptively tall building (you’ll see) with a garden on the roof. Keep an eye out for the summer events held here.

  • Prices: Cellar door is open for tasting from Labour Weekend till Easter and by appointment at other times if you have a larger group. Summer tasting fees $1 per wine tasted (this is waived if the wine is purchased). Full tasting for groups is $6 pp.
