Collage Café

Cafés & delis

This is a great little café where the contemporary food and ambience satisfy taste buds right up to big city standards. ‘Artistic combinations of food’ sounds terribly modern, but it matches up to, and even surpasses, its claims.

  • Prices: $12 for light meals, mid - $20s for lunch and dinner mains.
  • Contact: Prospero Place (adjacent to Stratford Information Centre and Percy Thompson Gallery), Stratford

New Plymouth

For those that are a bit peckish after culture-vulturing it through next-door Puke Ariki, glass-fronted Arborio sits right by the ocean and offers great views over to the crashing waves of the Tasman Sea. Breakfast treats such as crisp-fried pillows of bubble and squeak start the day. Lunchtime and dinner menus serve great pizzas and local produce like a lip-smackingly good sirloin steak with beetroot confit and spinach.

  • Prices: Breakfasts $9.50 - $17.00. Pizzas $15 - $21. Mains for dinner from $29.50.
  • Contact: Pure Ariki, North Wing, St Aubyn Street

André L’Escargot

New Plymouth

This traditional French restaurant has a wonderfully glamorous, old-style feel and, appropriately, was a favourite with Tom Cruise when he was filming The Last Samurai in town and around mountain - you’ll see him beaming in his snapshot on the wall. Expect fine French cuisine made from hearty fresh New Zealand produce, a great combo that could never disappoint.

  • Prices: Starters $13.50 - $21.50, mains $30 - $32.50, desserts $12.50 - $18.

Taranaki Highlights

  • Walk, climb, ski or just stare in amazement at the splendour of Mt Taranaki. There's a nice driving route that circles the volcano allowing you to photograph it from all angles.
  • On your way round, you'll get the opportunity to veer off the road towards the beaches of Oakura and Ounake (both world-class surfing and wind-surfing spots).
