Pukeiti Rhododendron Trust Garden

New Plymouth

Botany & gardens

Set in magnificent rainforest on the lower slopes of Mount Taranaki and looking out to the ocean, this garden is as spectacular as they come. This is New Zealand’s premier rhododendron garden and there are more than 20km of bush tracks, mountain streams, old logging lines and plenty upon plenty of plants to keep you well occupied. When I visited, the lady who runs this beautiful garden was deep in China, no doubt researching plants and flowers to find specimens to bring back here to Mount Taranaki.

Taranaki Highlights

  • Walk, climb, ski or just stare in amazement at the splendour of Mt Taranaki. There's a nice driving route that circles the volcano allowing you to photograph it from all angles.
  • On your way round, you'll get the opportunity to veer off the road towards the beaches of Oakura and Ounake (both world-class surfing and wind-surfing spots).
